Delhi is reeling from the worst outbreak of the dengue in five years, with 1,714 cases recorded in the national capital so far this year.
In the wake of reports of private hospitals allegedly refusing to admit patients of this mosquito-borne disease, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said that his government is planning to bring a law under which such hospitals could be penalised. This followed the death of a seven-year-old boy who succumbed to the disease after allegedly being turned away by five hospitals last week.
Even as the state government is facing the heat for being unable to handle the epidemic, Union health minister Satyendra Jain expressed displeasure with the slow pace of fumigation. He directed the three municipal corporations to ensure that field workers step up efforts at fumigation and disinfecting of stagnant water. But with multiple agencies involved, fixing the blame for the rising number of dengue patients is difficult.
