New Delhi: Mahabaleshwar, the Maharashtra hill town that is known to receive excess rainfall, recorded its second-highest single-day rainfall in a decade on Tuesday.
In 24 hours from 08:30am on Tuesday, Mahabaleshwar was lashed by 410mm rainfall, according to Skymet Weather Services Pvt. Ltd. The highest, 490mm, was recorded on 11 August 2008.
The rainfall average of these regions is usually high. The monthly average rainfall in Mahabaleshwar, part of the Western Ghats, is 1,778.4mm for August.
Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at Skymet, said the intensity of rainfall came down in the evening at around 5.30pm on Tuesday to 60mm. He further said ,Wednesday witnessed an average rainfall of around 210mm and the cumulative rainfall from Tuesday to Thursday would be of around 1154.8mm.
Many regions of the Western Ghats have received rainfall of more than 100 mm.
“Even though strawberries are cultivated in poly houses (climate-controlled enclosures) rainfall of 410 mm will damage the fruit (as the rainfall is too heavy for the strawberry),” said Nalin Raval, agribusiness head at Skymet.
Heavy showers have also occurred in Ratnagiri district. But it’s good news for the mango crop that has already been harvested in the Ratnagiri region, which is known for the Alphonso variety of mangoes, hence preventing damage to the mangoes.
The south-west monsoon has been active over the Konkan and Goa regions for quite some time. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned earlier that Goa will be receiving heavy rainfall in some of its isolated regions on 4 and 5 August and advised fishermen not to go out in the sea for the next 24 hours. These regions received thundershowers on Thursday, according to IMD.
Pune also recorded 40 mm rainfall, while Vidharba and Marathwada, the drought-prone regions of Maharashtra, will be rain surplus regions this year, says Palawat. Adjoining regions to Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh will receive normal rainfall.
Vidharba, Konkan and Goa will receive heavy rainfall in the coming two days, according to IMD.
