New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released on Monday Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree certificates—one for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Delhi University and the other for a Master of Arts from Gujarat University—to counter repeated allegations made by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal that Modi did not posses a valid degree.

Displaying the two degree certificates during a press conference at the BJP headquarters, party president Amit Shah said that Kejriwal should now apologise to the people of the country.

“It is tragic that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees have become an issue. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had alleged that PM’s degrees were fake, he had no proof to allege that degrees were fake, he should apologise to the people of the country," said Shah.

Shah said neither BJP nor Modi will file a defamation case against Kejriwal or the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal made (the claim) without checking facts. Members of Legislative Assembly of AAP are facing investigations because they had presented fake degrees. This also shows the level of discussion between Delhi and the union government. Politics should be issue-based," said finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was also present at the press conference.

Soon after being elected to power in Delhi, the Delhi government faced similar allegations after questions were raised over the law degree of former cabinet minister Jitendar Singh Tomar.

AAP has been demanding that Modi put his degrees in the public domain. It said the issue was not whether the PM was “10th pass or 12th pass" but that he has furnished “fake" certificates and “cheated" the people of the country.

Last week, AAP alleged that a degree obtained by a namesake of Modi has been shown as the Prime Minister’s, which Kejriwal said amounted to “cheating". He told a press conference on 6 May that he can assert with “full responsibility" that Delhi University’s records have no mention of “Narendra Damodardas Modi" and that one “Narendra Kumar Mahavir Prasad Modi" had taken admission in 1975.

On Monday, Kejriwal said on Twitter, “Documents in DU (Delhi University) have been sealed. BJP presents Farzi docs in a PC (Press Conference) and gets real records sealed? Why? Implement CIC (Central Information Commission) order. Allow inspection."

Ashutosh, senior leader and spokesperson of AAP said, “There were very serious allegations against the PM’s degrees. AAP wants to tell the people that the degree that has been made public is fake and forged. They say you need brains for forgery as well. The two degrees which have been made public today have Narendra Kumar Damodardas Modi in the Delhi University but in the MA degree the name says Narendra Damodardas Modi. Where is the affidavit where his name was changed?"
