Mumbai: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said his party continues to oppose the 9900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power project.

“If it is 100% safe, why are other states not coming forward for the project?" Thackeray said on the sidelines of a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in New Delhi.

In 2011, an agitation by the Sena against the Jaitapur nuclear power project in Ratnagiri district of the state had turned violent and one fisherman who was protesting against the project was killed in police firing.

“It is not very big issue, I will be sorting it out in days to come by having discussions with Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh and (prime minister-elect) Narendrabhai (Modi)," he said.
