40 years after Emergency: Govt to develop Lok Nayak JP’s birthplace in Bihar
The decision also comes a few months ahead of Bihar going to state assembly elections later this year
New Delhi: On the eve of the 40 years of imposition of Emergency, the Union cabinet on Wednesday announced measures to develop the birthplace of Jayaprakash Narayan, who led a movement against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s authoriatarian rule.
The cabinet on Wednesday announced a national memorial, a national museum, a research institute to study subjects like democracy, Gandhian thought and role of panchayats as well as a khadi centre to promote the use of the indigenous material at Lala Tola in Sitabdiara village of Bihar.
Mint reported on Monday that the village lacked basic infrastructure, including roads, health and educational facilities.
“There will be a national memorial in Lala Tola and a national museum too. There would be a mobile museum that would talk about Narayan’s life and his contribution to our society. A virtual museum will also be made on the same theme," Union home minister Rajnath Singh told reporters at the end of the cabinet meeting on Thursday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s decision to revive Narayan’s birthplace comes a few months ahead of Bihar going to assembly elections later this year. Narayan has a key political reference in the state where most of the second generation leaders are his followers including chief minister Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.
