BJP to get full majority in Delhi elections: opinion poll

The opinion poll predicts BJP will get 45 seats with 38% vote share, AAP 17 seats with 27% vote share and Congress 7 seats in the 70-seat House in Delhi

New Delhi: After a gap of 21 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will form the government on its own in Delhi after the upcoming assembly election, indicate the results of an opinion poll conducted by ABP News-Nielsen.

The opinion poll predicts that BJP will get 45 seats with 38% vote share while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is expected to get 17 seats with 27% vote share and Congress will win 7 seats with 27% vote share in the 70-seat House in Delhi. The last time BJP won the assembly election in Delhi was in 1993 when the party won 49 seats in the 70 member Delhi assembly.

The opinion poll was conducted by ABP News-Nielsen in 35 assembly constituencies with 6,409 respondents from 4 December to 8 December.

Interestingly, the opinion poll also found that 50% feel that BJP would form the government in the upcoming elections in Delhi while around 38% feel that AAP should form the government. The election commission has yet not announced the date of polling.

The ABP News-Nielsen opinion poll also suggests that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is the most preferred candidate with 43% vote share for the post of Delhi’s chief minister and Harsh Vardhan of BJP is closely behind at 39% vote share.

There is some good news for the AAP as the opinion poll found that a majority of 65% respondents have rated the performance of former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal as good or very good in the 49 day government. However, 74% respondents also feel that the performance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi led BJP’s government has been good and very good in the last six months. Kejriwal had left the top post on 14 February this year.

As per the opinion poll, inflation, sanitation, drinking water and unemployment are the more important issues being faced by the people of Delhi. The opinion poll also found that 67% respondents feel law and order situation in Delhi had deteriorated while 83% of the respondents wanted full statehood for Delhi.
