Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday joined leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, in slamming the razing of a statue of Russian leader Vladimir Lenin in Tripura, following the defeat of the Left party in the north-eastern state.
Banerjee said Lenin wasn’t a leader she followed, but global leaders such as he deserved respect.
CPM politburo member Mohammad Salim wrote to the prime minister alleging that miscreants affiliated to the victorious Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had unleashed a reign of terror in Tripura, and that supporters of his party were being attacked across the state.
