Bengaluru: Officials at the Bangalore airport are updating old systems to cater to legions of tech-savvy travellers flying in and out of the city daily. After introducing mobile boarding pass on select flights earlier this year, Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) has set up automated e-gates at domestic pre-embarkation security check areas to fast-track the screening of passengers moving towards the security check area.
Started on a trial basis, passengers can flash their 2D barcoded paper or mobile boarding pass at the e-gates now. The gates will open automatically upon verifying the identity and the details of the passengers will also be displayed on a screen built into the e-gate.
The passengers can then proceed for the mandatory security check. Once passengers cross the e-gate, they do not have to produce their boarding pass again until actual boarding begins.
In effect, the e-gate facility eliminates the need for a manual security stamp on the boarding pass. Although being deployed on selected flights and only on one lane now, the airport plans to expand using such measures subject to mandatory government clearances, airport officials said.
“Bengaluru is a great location for us to pioneer new technology initiatives, with a traveller who is IT-savvy, young and excited about independent processes,” G.V. Sanjay Reddy, managing director, BIAL, said in a statement. “The intent is to provide all passengers services that define the technological prowess and is a reflection of the city the airport is in. The e-Gate is a definite step towards a fully automated and seamless passenger flow.”
As traffic at the airport grows steadily, such automation processes will enable more efficient passenger flow and ensure better compliance with security protocols. The airport handled close to 15 million passengers in 2014-15, clocking almost a 13.2% year-on-year increase.
The airport enlisted KABA, a German technology company to set up the e-gates. For additional security measure, CCTV cameras have been deployed at the gates.
