A day after V.K. Sasikala was convicted in a DA case, the AIADMK general secretary surrendered. Here are the latest updates in the continuing political crisis in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: A day after the Supreme Court upheld V.K. Sasikala’s conviction in a disproportionate assets case, the AIADMK general secretary is on her way to surrender before the Bengaluru trial court which has been shifted to a jail on the city’s outskirts.
While the Supreme Court verdict effectively ended Sasikala’s own claim to Tamil Nadu’s chief minister post, Sasikala designated Edapadi K. Palanisamy as the chief-minister designate yesterday, and expelled rebels led by O. Panneerselvam from the party. A bid to get more time to surrender came to naught as the Supreme Court turned down her plea on Wednesday.
Meanwhile , the battle with rebel CM O. Panneerselvam continues with the ball in the court of governor Ch Vidayasagar Rao after Palanisamy staked claim to form the government.
■ DMK Working President M K Stalin today claimed a government led by either O Panneerselvam or any AIADMK nominee would not be stable and could lead to elections to the state assembly even before local body polls, due already. Addressing party workers at a meeting here, he said the present government headed by caretaker Chief Minister Panneerselvam was only an interim arrangement. (PTI)

■ Sasikala’s relatives V N Sudhakaran and Elavarasi, whose conviction by the trial court in Bengaluru had been upheld by the Supreme Court, also surrendered. Four cars in the cavalcade of Sasikala were damaged soon after it arrived near the court premises, police said, adding, it was not immediately known who did it. (PTI)

■ Sasikala is expected to fly to Bengaluru on Wednesday and surrender at the trial court as per the SC order.
■ One of the legal options available to Sasikala is a review petition that can be filed before the apex court in case of an apparent error in the judgment.
■ Sasikala will be lodged in the Parappana Agrahara, which has over 4,000 inmates. According to a senior police official, no special treatment will be given unless there is a court order based on health grounds of the convict. The jail does not have a special cell to house high-profile inmates.
In September 2014, the then Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalitha stayed in the dispensary ward of the jail after three beds were removed to make room for her.
