Bengaluru: Four days after several women were molested on the streets of Bengaluru on New Year’s eve, the city police filed a first information report (FIR) against two unidentified men based on evidence that came to light on Wednesday.

CCTV footage showed two men on a bike molesting a woman on a street in the residential area of Kammanahalli at around midnight on 31 December.

The video shows the woman getting out of an auto rickshaw and walking towards her house, as the two men follow her on a bike.

They grope her drag her to the bike as she resists. The video went viral on social media, raising questions about women’s safety in India’s fastest-growing city.

Hemant Nimbalkar, additional commissioner of police, told reporters that even though the woman has not registered a complaint so far, police filed an FIR based on the footage under Sections 341 (for wrongful restraint), 354A and 354B (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Nimbalkar further added that a special team has been formed for investigation.

Incidents of molestation were also reported from the commercial hub, MG Road and Brigade Road, but police have not made any arrests so far.

Bengaluru police commissioner Praveen Sood tweeted on Tuesday night that his team is working on the investigation “though silently".

“Enquiry conducted by a DCP rank officer has gone through feed from 45 cameras at MG road. Unedited video available with police," he said on Twitter.
