Income tax department creates new vertical for taxpayer services
New vertical created in line with the recommendation of the tax administration reforms commission (TARC)
New Delhi: The income tax department has created a separate vertical specially focussing on taxpayer services in line with the recommendation of the tax administration reforms commission (TARC) to adopt a more customer-focused approach.
The new vertical is in addition to functions such as revenue, investigation, legislation and computerization, income tax, personnel and vigilance and audit and judicial services that are overseen by members of the central board of direct taxes (CBDT).
“Member (Revenue and Tax Payer Services) will oversee the delivery and monitoring of taxpayer services in CBDT. Two separate Directorates, called Directorate of Tax Payer Services I and Directorate of Tax Payer Services II have been set up," said a statement by the income tax department.
These directorates will be responsible for delivery and monitoring of taxpayers services in field offices and e-services delivered through various electronic platforms of the department.
They will oversee and co-ordinate all matters relating to grievances of taxpayers and ensure their timely redressal, the statement said.
In addition, the responsibility has been assigned at every level in the field offices for taxpayer services. This will ensure accountability of officials in redressing grievances in a time-bound manner, it added.
