Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday slammed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for abstaining from the vote on a US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.

In a strongly worded press statement, DMK chief M.Karunanidhi said the abstention showed that the government “does not care about Tamilians." It also showed a lack of regard for international human rights issues, said the statement.

India, which has previously voted three times against Sri Lanka’s human rights record at the same forum, said it had reservations over the “intrusive approach" favoured by the resolution that “undermines national sovereignty and institutions (which) is counterproductive".

There were 23 votes in favour of the resolution adopted on Thursday, 12 against, including those by Pakistan and China, and 12 abstentions.

The DMK pulled out of the UPA last year, citing the government’s failure to persuade Sri Lanka to meaningfully address Tamil human rights.

“On 26 March, in my election rally speech I had extended an olive branch to the Congress despite its betrayal," Karunanidhi noted.

“If Congress expressed regret and apologized, due to its secular credentials DMK was still willing to partner with it.," he said, adding that the Centre had been emboldened to abstain from the vote because of his party’s absence from the coalition.
