Cairo: An Australian journalist for Al Jazeera television imprisoned for more than a year in Egypt on terrorism-related charges was released from prison and will be deported.

Peter Greste is on his way to Cairo airport, where he will be handed over to Australian diplomats and then expelled, a prison official who spoke on condition of anonymity said by phone on Sunday. State TV confirmed Greste is to be deported. The fate of two other Al Jazeera journalists detained with him in December 2013 is unclear.

The three were detained amid a broader dispute between Egypt and Qatar, where Al Jazeera is based. Qatar supported the government of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s democratically elected Islamist predecessor, Mohamed Mursi, and denounced his July 2013 overthrow, which El-Sisi led as then-defence minister.

El-Sisi said in an interview with Bloomberg TV last month that he was seeking a resolution to the case of Greste, along with Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohamed. There has been no word on the fate of the two other journalists.

“We’re pleased for Peter and his family that they are to be reunited," Al Jazeera said in a statement. “We will not rest until Baher and Mohamed also regain their freedom. The Egyptian authorities have it in their power to finish this properly today, and that is exactly what they must do."

An Egyptian appeals court this month ordered the retrial of the journalists, who were detained in December 2013. The trio were charged with supporting El-Sisi’s Muslim Brotherhood rivals, sullying Egypt’s image and posing a threat to its security. Greste and Fahmy were sentenced to seven years in prison, while Mohamed received 10 years.

Human rights organizations and activists have condemned their detention as evidence of repression of freedoms since the army toppled Mursi after widespread protests against his rule. Bloomberg
