New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) to consider a fresh environmental clearance for the mining of limestone by Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt. Ltd in Meghalaya.
The apex court also said that the ministry, while granting the clearance for mining operations, would consider the additional conditions which Lafarge has been asked to meet, including the deposit of Rs55 crore towards the net present value of forest land to be used for welfare projects for tribals.
The Supreme Court on 5 February, hearing a petition by 21 local tribals and the Shella Action Committee, a non-governmental organization, had stayed the mining of limestone by Lafarge in Meghalaya.
