New Delhi: As the election results draw to a close many top officials, part of the secretariat of various top ministers in the UPA-led Congress government, are looking for greener pastures.

Most of the staff in a minister’s office are typically political appointments and change with the incoming minister.

One of the recent high-profile movements was that of external affairs minister Salman Khurshid’s private secretary Alok Singh, who has been appointed to the flag carrier Air India Ltd.

The letters exchanged between the various ministries for his deputation show great urgency and were completed within a matter of three days.

“MEA (ministry of external affairs) has requested to relieve Shri Alok Singh IPS (1995) immediately to enable him to join another assignment at the earliest," Mukesh Sawhney, in the ministry of home affairs, wrote in a letter on 7 May.

The letters have been reviewed by Mint.

The ministry of external affairs was in turn quick to write to the aviation ministry the very next day.

“Alok Singh IPS (1995) has been serving in the ministry of external affairs as PS to Hon’ble External Affairs minister Shri Salman Khurshid wef Oct 2012 on central deputation. Consequent upon his appointment as ED security in Air India Ltd under administrative control of MOCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation)..dated 6th May..the competent authority has approved for the relieving of Shri Alok Singh from his duties on the afternoon of 8/5/2014 to enable him to join his new assignment," Amita Bansal, administrative officer in the MEA wrote in the 8 May letter.

The polling for the general elections ends on 12 May and the results are to be announced on 16 May.

A key bureaucrat Prabhat Kumar in the aviation ministry headed by Ajit Singh has already been given charge of India’s top aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation or DGCA for a period of three years.
