Winter session may address pending bills in last three days

Third car-free day in Delhi on 22 December; India-Pak cricket series may take place on 24 December-5 January

New Delhi: After the truce in Parliament, the government is hopeful about a substantial portion of pending legislative business being completed in the remaining three days of the Winter Session ending 23 December. After disruptions in both Houses, particularly the Rajya Sabha, over the last three weeks, the government and opposition arrived at an agreement on Saturday at an all-party meeting called by Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari to pass those bills on which there is a general consensus, skipping the contentious GST bill. Pending key bills include The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill and The Whistle Blowers Protection (Amendment) Bill.

Alkem Labs, Dr Lal PathLabs to list on 23 December

Drug maker Alkem Laboratories and diagnostic chain Dr Lal PathLabs, which recently concluded initial public offerings (IPOs) successfully, would list their shares on the stock exchanges on 23 December. Alkem has raised about 1,350 crore at an issue price of 1,050 per share from its IPO, which was oversubscribed 44.29 times. Dr Lal’s IPO too was a huge success with 33.41 times oversubscription. The price band was fixed at 540-550 per share for the 638 crore IPO. It raised over 191 crore from anchor investors by selling shares at 550 apiece.

India-Pak cricket series may take place on 24 December-5 January

The short bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan will be held between 24 December and 5 January if it gets the green signal from the Indian government this week. According to a reliable source in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the tentative dates discussed for the series is meant for a short series of three ODIs and two Twenty20 matches.

President on two-day visit to Karnataka

President Pranab Mukherjee will be on a two-day visit to Karnataka from 22 December for official engagements. According to his itinerary, the President will fly to Bidar in the state’s northern region on 22 December and proceed to Kalaburgi, about 650 km from Bengaluru, to participate in the second annual convocation of the Central University of which he is the chancellor.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Amethi

After a gap of around four months, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi would pay a two-day visit to his Lok Sabha constitutency Amethi, beginning 23 December. Rahul is scheduled to travel to villages, interact with locals and hold chaupals. He will also hold separate meetings with the local party workers. “Panchayat elections were going on and thus, he could not visit. During his two-day visit, he will visit villages, speak to locals and meet workers," said Chandrakant Dubey, Rahul’s representative in Amethi.

India-Bangladesh border talks this week

India will hold a high-level border dialogue with Bangladesh this week in Dhaka in the backdrop of the recent handing over of top insurgents by the neighbouring country and its efforts to end cattle smuggling across the over 4,000-km frontier the two neighbours share. A 23-member Indian delegation will travel to the Bangladeshi capital for the six-day bi-annual DG-level talks with their counterparts. The meeting is scheduled for 22-27 December.

Delhi may not witness dense fog immediately

Delhi and the National Capital Region may not witness a major spell of dense fog until 24 December, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). There may, however, be fresh fog formations in morning hours on 20 and 22 December. December to February witness dense fog formation in Delhi and across north India, which not only affects vehicular but also rail and air traffic.

Third car-free day in Delhi on 22 December

In an attempt to control the rising pollution level in the national Capital, the Delhi government is set to observe its third car-free day on 22 December. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will deploy eight special shuttle buses along with the normal bus service on that route. Sufficient number of DTC officers and traffic supervisors will also be deployed to help commuters.
