New Delhi: The government has formed a seven-member panel to look into the issue of online drug sales, minister of state for chemicals and fertilizers Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The sale and distribution of drugs in the country is regulated under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945.

As per the rules, drugs can’t be sold except with the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.

The minister said that a number of representations have been received from chemist and druggist associations against the online sale of prescription drugs.

Similarly, a number of representations have also been received to permit such sales. The representations were discussed in detail at a Drugs Consultative Committee meeting on 24 July.
