New Delhi: The Delhi high court on Wednesday considered the possibility of unification of different municipal corporations operating in the national capital region to avoid problems like delay in payment of salaries to employees due to lack of funds.

A bench comprising chief justice G. Rohini and justice Jayant Nath sought a reply from the Lt. Governor and three municipal bodies while noting that the matter required consideration.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation brought by Sharad Tiwari, seeking to unite north, south and east municipal corporations to deal with the ongoing problem of non-payment of salary to employees, resulting in strikes by municipal workers.

The petition claimed that the division of the municipal corporation into three zones had created a funding shortage as money is going towards paying appointees such as chairman and deputy chairman of each corporation.

The matter will be heard next on 23 March.
