New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to ban Rs500 and Rs1,000 currency notes on 8 November has evoked sharp reactions from the opposition parties, giving them a cause to rally public opinion against the central government. The opposition parties are demanding the Prime Minister’s statement and a debate on the issue followed by a voting in the Parliament’s ongoing Winter session. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is ready to debate without voting on the issue.
Here is what has been said by the prominent opposition leaders against the demonetisation drive:
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi: “What the PM has done is the biggest impromptu financial experiment in the world. He did not ask anyone.”
On PM Modi not giving any statement, Rahul earlier said, “Prime Minister can give lectures to pop concert where ‘naach gaana’ is going on. 200 MPs are saying they want to tell the nation why he took this decision. PM does not want to come to Parliament. Why is PM afraid of going inside? He is obviously anxious about something.”
Former prime minister Manmohan Singh: “The way this scheme has been implemented is a monumental management failure and in fact it is a case of organised loot and legalised plunder,” he told the Upper House of Parliament.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) general secretary Sitaram Yechury: “It is an abnormal situation where the people cannot use their own money. It is violation of their fundamental right to property. How can you deny me from using my own property.”
Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati: “I want to tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi that if you really are an honest man and want a correct survey and if you have guts, then dissolve Parliament and hold fresh elections.”
Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav: “Pradhan Mantriji ghamand me na choor hon...aaj hum unko savadhan karna chahte hain ke woh apni nitiyon mein sanshodhan karen...loktantra mein manmani nahi chalti...(The PM should not be arrogant. Today I caution him to change his policies. There is no place for individual’s whims and fancies in a democracy.”
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav: “Like Uncle Podger, Modiji boasts he needs no one,bt soon employs evryone, creates mess, blames all-Picture out of frame &himself out of scene.”
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal: “The move has “completely derailed the life of aam aadmi”.
Describing PM Modi’s step as “courageous”, Janata Dal United president and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar criticized poor implementation and demanded further action against benami properties.
He said: “While supporting demonetisation in principle, I, with equal strength, criticise the poor arrangements for its implementation due to which common man is facing hardship. I am seeing a minus with plus whereas many others are seeing only minuses.”
