John Kasich suspending Republican Presidential campaign: reports
The Ohio governor had vowed to continue until Trump reached the 1,237 delegates needed for the nomination before the party's convention in July
Columbus: Ohio governor John Kasich is suspending his presidential campaign, NBC News and others reported, as Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus called for the party to unite behind presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
Kasich cancelled a news conference Wednesday and his campaign said he’d speak at 5 p.m. Eastern in Columbus. He had originally scheduled two days of fundraisers, national security advisory meetings, and press availabilities in the Washington area starting Wednesday.
Messages to his campaign weren’t immediately returned. A person close to the campaign said it was likely Kasich would suspend his campaign Wednesday.
Kasich’s move follows Trump’s dominating victory in Indiana on Tuesday, which forced Texas senator Ted Cruz out of the race. Kasich finished a distant third in that contest, after ceding it to Cruz in a deal that allowed him to focus on Oregon and New Mexico.
The Ohio governor had vowed to continue until Trump reached the 1,237 delegates needed for the nomination before the party’s convention in July, hoping to keep Trump below that number and win in Cleveland on multiple ballots as the most electable Republican in the November general election. But he has won only his home state on 15 March and languishes in fourth in delegates, even behind former candidate Marco Rubio. Bloomberg
