Lanka army takes last LTTE town
Colomobo: Sri Lanka troops on Sunday captured the last town controlled by the rebel Tamil Tigers, Mullaittivu, after heavy fighting with the guerrillas, army chief Lt Gen. Sarath Fonseka announced.
“We have completely captured Mullaittivu," the army chief said in a televised address to the nation.
The fall of the town—which had been the only remaining urban stronghold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)—is a major blow to the rebels.
The Tigers, who are known to maintain their main military facilities in the lagoon and jungle district of Mullaittivu, have been steadily losing territory to government forces since July 2007.
