Bhopal: Riding the Narendra Modi ‘wave´, the BJP virtually wiped out Congress in Madhya Pradesh as it won 27 of the 29 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The consolation wins for Congress came in the Chhindwara and Guna Lok Sabha seats where Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia, respectively, retained their seats.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan credited Modi’s charismatic leadership for BJP’s spectacular win while also pointing at the large number of follies committed by the UPA government.

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Sumitra Mahajan won from Indore for her eighth consecutive term by the highest margin of 4,66,901 votes.

She was followed by Sushma Swaraj who retained Vidisha for a second term by a record margin of 4,10,698 votes.

Prominent BJP leaders who won in the state are former prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee’s nephew and senior party leader Anoop Mishra from Morena, Madhya Pradesh BJP president Narendra Singh Tomar from Gwalior, former IAS officer Bhagirath Prasad, who joined BJP a day after getting a Congress ticket, from Bhind and former Union ministers Faggan Singh Kulaste and Prahlad Patel.

Senior Congress leaders who lost include former Union minister Kantilal Bhuria from Ratlam, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s close confidante Meenakshi Natarajan from Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh Congress president and former Union minister Arun Yadav from Khandwa, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh’s brother Laxman Singh from Vidisha and former Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Ajay Singh from Satna.

The lowest victory margin was that of Ganesh Singh, who defeated Ajay Singh by a margin 8,688 votes in Satna.

With 27 seats in its kitty, the BJP has cornered a vote share of 54% while Congress secured 34.9% of the votes. Aam Aadmi Party, which fielded candidates in all 29 seats, managed to get just 1.2% of the vote share and failed to win even a single seat.
