Chennai: In a bid to mount pressure on the Tamil Nadu government under Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the O. Panneerselvam-led faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) would stage a hunger strike on 8 March across the state, seeking a probe into late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s death.

A request for permission to hold the hunger strike has been made to the Chennai police commissioner by E. Madhusudhanan,a senior leader from the Panneerselvam faction.

“The state government which is responsible to answer regarding the mystery over Amma’s (Jayalalithaa) death is maintaining silence," said Madhusudhanan in a statement.

Panneerselvam and other senior leaders would lead the protest in Chennai and supporters of the former chief minister’s faction would carry out the stir in all the district headquarters, said a press release.

The AIADMK MPs, supporting Panneerselvam, led by V. Maitreyan on Tuesday met President Pranab Mukherjee and demanded a probe into Jayalalithaa’s death.

“There are many doubts among the AIADMK followers over Jayalalithaa’s death. As the Tamil Nadu government will not accept our demand, we have submitted a memorandum to the President," Maitreyan said after meeting with the President.

Jayalalithaa, who was admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai on 22 September last year to treat fever and dehydration, spent 75 days and was declared dead on 5 December following a cardiac arrest.
