New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar who has been charged with sedition and criminal conspiracy by the Delhi police on Thursday moved the Supreme Court (SC) seeking bail.

Kumar has been in judicial custody since 13 February.

An apex court bench headed by justice J. Chelameswar will hear the plea on Friday.

Kumar’s petition was moved by JNU professor Himanshu. It said that there was a threat to his life in jail. The petition, a copy of which Mint reviewed, also said that he was innocent and falsely implicated in this case.

Kumar said that it was not possible to move the Patiala House Court for bail given the breakdown of law and order there.

The Patiala House Courts Complex witnessed a mob of men dressed in lawyer’s clothes attacking students and journalists around the time when Kumar was brought there. This happened twice on 15 and 17 February.
