New Delhi: A BRICS nations conference on international competition here next month will provide renewed focus and thrust on India’s competition laws, according to Competition Commission of India (CCI) chairman Ashok Chawla.

Authorities and experts from across the world are expected to attend the third BRICS international competition conference scheduled in the national capital from 20-22 November.

The BRICS grouping consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The conference is held every two years and the theme this time is competition enforcement in BRICS countries: issues and challenges.

“The advantage (of the conference being held in India) will be that there will be renewed focus and thrust on competition law and competition enforcement in India," CCI chief Chawla said.

He noted the idea of having the conference is to gain from the knowledge pool and experience of other countries. “We will also get, at a single platform, the benefit of expert advice not only from other BRICS countries but also from various international experts who would be coming from the advanced and matured jurisdictions such as European Union, the US, Australia and the UK, among others," Chawla said.

Discussions would focus on issues and challenges related to enforcement of competition rules with regard to state enterprises and public procurement, among others. The conference is being organized following the New Delhi declaration and action plan adopted at the fourth BRICS Leaders Summit held here in March 2012. The previous two conferences were held in Russia and China.
