Decision on PM candidate gaining majority: Congress
Congress says decision on prime ministerial candidate will be taken only after the party comes into majority after the 2014 elections
New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday said that a decision on its prime ministerial candidate would be taken only after the party comes into majority after the 2014 elections.
“In the next 12-14 months nothing is happening...when elections happen in 2014 and when we come in the majority, we will collectively take a decision," P.C. Chacko, party spokesperson said in reply to a question on whether Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be the ruling party’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 elections.
While returning from the BRICS summit in Durban last week, Singh in a media interaction had indicated not ruling out another term as the Prime Minister of India.
“He is eminently suited for the post, there is no doubt about it...but the decision will be taken only after 2014 elections," Chacko said.
In reply to a question on whether Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi could be the party’s prime ministerial candidate, he said: “We are too far away from there."
