BackNGT issues notice to govt over tobacco consumption in public

New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday sought a response from the government on the issue of consumption of tobacco in public places.
The direction came from a bench headed by NGT chairperson justice Swatanter Kumar on a plea highlighting the health problems and environmental damage caused by consumption of tobacco in public spaces.
The plea was submitted by Doctors For You, a registered charitable society working to help cancer patients. It sought a ban on the consumption of tobacco in any form in public places and on the use of plastic as packaging material for tobacco products.
The organization, represented through advocate Aishwarya Bhati, claimed that tobacco posed a challenge not just to health but also to the environment through its cultivation, processing, production and disposal.
While taking cognizance of the matter, the court issued notices to ministry of environment and forest, ministry of health and family welfare and central pollution control board and sought their replies by 2 November.
