New Delhi: Former home secretary Anil Baijal’s appointment as the next lieutenant governor (L-G) of Delhi has received the President’s clearance, senior home ministry officials said on Wednesday.
President Pranab Mukherjee accepted outgoing L-G Najeeb Jung’s resignation and cleared Baijal’s appointment, they said, on condition of anonymity.
“Anil Baijal served as a very senior officer in the Indian Administrative Services (IAS). He was also associated with the Vivekananda Foundation and has been appointed the next L-G of Delhi," said one of the officials.
A 1969 batch IAS officer, Baijal served as home secretary during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance government. In August, his name did the rounds as a replacement for N.N. Vohra, the governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Baijal, 70, retired from the IAS in October 2006 as secretary of the urban development ministry.
He has served as secretary general of the Federation of Indian Airlines, the apex body of scheduled Indian carriers, as vice-chairman of the Delhi Development Authority and as chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati.
Jung submitted his resignation on 22 December.
Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party, which has had a tumultuous relationship with him, refused to comment on Baijal’s appointment.
