US President Barack Obama will discuss climate change, defence, civil nuclear cooperation and economic partnership during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday.

“We are committed to work with India to reach a landmark climate change agreement in Paris at the end of this year," Kerry said in a speech on the second day of the seventh Vibrant Gujarat summit under way in Gandhinagar.

Kerry said both countries have invested significantly in their relationship and will continue to deepen it.

The second India visit by Obama—the first US President to do so—speaks a lot about the value both countries have placed on the relationship, Kerry said. The US President will be India’s chief guest on its Republic Day on 26 January.

The US and India are working together on maritime security, freedom of navigation and overflight throughout the region, combating terrorism and weapons proliferation, Kerry said, adding his country will work towards helping with ensuring uninterrupted electricity for Indians.

Kerry also reiterated US commitment to deepening regional dialogue on key political and security issues.

“I am impressed with what I have seen during the Vibrant Gujarat summit," Kerry said, adding the PM has made it very clear that he wants to move rapidly.

Under Modi’s leadership, it has become easier for the American companies to invest in India, Kerry said. “PM Narendra Modi has built a reputation by building efficiency, trying to make decisions faster, by streamlining bureaucracy," he said, adding this should be extended to the rest of India.

“For both India and the US, investing in each other’s success is frankly in both of our interests. It is really a smart, strategic bet for both the countries," he said.
