Political influence affects quality of sports: poll
More than half the respondents in an instaVaani poll have come out in favour of sports betting being made legal in India
More than half the respondents in an instaVaani poll have come out in favour of sports betting being made legal in India. The poll of 524 respondents across major metros was conducted after a Supreme Court-appointed committee headed by former chief justice R.M. Lodha on Monday suggested sweeping changes to clean up Indian cricket, including legalizing betting “with strong safeguards".
Some 53% (187 of 351 respondents) who replied to a specific question in the poll said betting should be legalized in India; 76% (396 of 524 respondents) said in reply to another question that political influence over sports governing bodies in India exists. Eighty-one per cent (344 of 425 respondents) said this influence affects the quality of sports.
The Lodha committee was formed to look into the betting and spot-fixing scandal that marred the Indian Premier League cricket tournament in 2013.
