Maharashtra will get central drought relief: Rahul Gandhi
Rahul says he will ensure that Maharashtra gets the most aid that the centre can provide in terms of drought relief
Mumbai: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said he will ensure that Maharashtra gets the most aid that the centre can provide in terms of drought relief.
Gandhi, who was on his first tour of the state after assuming charge as Congress vice president, spoke in Mumbai on Friday after meeting party workers and state chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.
Gandhi, who said he’s planning to tour of drought-affected areas in the state, had a day-long meeting with office bearers of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) to take stock of the party’s organisational strengths and weaknesses in the city, India’s commercial capital.
In 2009, Congress won five out of six Lok Sabha seats and half the 36 assembly seats in Mumbai. But despite such a strong presence in the city, the party failed to wrest control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine in the 2012 election.
“If Congress has to come back to power both in centre and the state, its performance in Mumbai is key," said a Congress member of the legislative assembly from Mumbai.
Rahul said an MRCC chief will be appointed soon; the post has been vacant for a little over a year.
