Kolkata: Manjul Krishna Thakur, a minister in West Bengal, on Thursday quit the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—the first major defection from the ruling party in the state. Thakur, a leader of the Matua sect, said “anyone with conscience" couldn’t continue to be with the TMC. The sect, which has a significant say in at least 70 assembly constituencies in Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts, have for the past few years backed the TMC.

Thakur’s defection comes at a time when the TMC and BJP are preparing for a close contest in a Lok Sabha by-election at North 24 Parganas constituency. TMC spokesperson Partha Chatterjee described the defection as inconsequential.
