New Delhi: Foreign secretary S. Jaishankar, seen as a key figure in steering the Indian government’s policies towards China, Pakistan and the US, has been given a one-year extension in office, a government statement said on Monday.
Jaishankar, whose two-year term in office comes to an end on 28 January, is seen as one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s closest advisers on foreign policy. He was appointed foreign secretary in January 2015, after the then foreign secretary, Sujatha Singh, was asked to put in her papers.
A former ambassador to the US and China, besides being a high commissioner to Singapore, Jaishankar’s tenure as foreign secretary was expected to be extended.
Jaishankar, 62, is an officer of the 1977 batch of the Indian Foreign Service. He is also the son of late K. Subrahmanyam, one of India’s leading strategic analysts and civil servants. He was a key member of the Indian team that negotiated the landmark India-US nuclear deal that was signed in 2008.
