Will withdraw 2016 notification on Jallikattu: Centre to SC
The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict in the case filed by the Animal Welfare Board and animal rights body PETA against the 2016 notification
New Delhi: The central government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it will withdraw its 2016 notification that allowed bull taming sport Jallikattu and bullock cart races in the country.
“We will withdraw the notification," Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said.
The apex court has reserved its verdict in the case filed by the Animal Welfare Board and animal rights body People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) against the 2016 notification.
Last week, Rohatgi had asked the court to delay pronouncement of the verdict by a week. Judge Dipak Misra had agreed to the government’s request.
On 23 January, the Tamil Nadu state assembly, in a special session, unanimously passed a bill replacing an 20 January ordinance that gives Jallikattu legal sanctity, bypassing the apex court’s earlier rulings.
The apex court had ruled in 2014 that Jallikattu was unlawful and violates rights of animals. A plea for reviewing the 2014 ruling was also considered and dismissed in 2016.
