New Delhi: Two CPM politburo members said there was no question of party general secretary Prakash Karat resigning after the party’s poor performance in the general election. Nirupam Sen and Manik Sarkar spoke after a politburo meeting in New Delhi on Monday. West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee didn’t attend the meeting.

A third politburo member, who didn’t want to be named, said questions were indeed being raised about Karat’s leadership after the election results.

Meanwhile, the politburo has asked state units for reports on poll performance, and the reasons for it.

Another senior politburo member, who also did not want to be identified, said the party had asked state units in West Bengal and Kerala, where it suffered poll reverses, to direct all party members to refrain from speaking to the media.

This was done after media reports quoted some defeated candidates as questioning the CPM leadership.

PTI contributed to this story.
