Ahmedabad: Ending uncertainty over United States becoming a partner country for the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit to be held in Gandhinagar in January 2017, the US Department of State on Saturday said that it has agreed to do so.

According to an official statement by the Department which is posted on its official website, assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal hosted a meeting with a delegation from Gujarat, led by Gujarat’s resident commissioner in New Delhi Bharat Lal and accompanied by Indian charge d’Affaires Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu on 15 September.

The assistant secretary praised Lal for his efforts to make the Gujarat a model of innovation and sustainable economic growth and reform for India. She also announced the United States’ intent to participate as a partner country in the 2017 Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, the Government of Gujarat’s biennial investors’ summit that brings together global business leaders, investors, corporations, thought leaders, and policymakers, according to the media statement.

Welcoming the announcement, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said in an official statement on Saturday that US’ partnership will add to the prestige of Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

Earlier this month, US consul general Thomas Vajda during his visit to Gujarat had said while talking to media persons that US was yet to take a final call in joining VGGIS-2017 event.

The reason for this being that the Presidential elections in US is to be held in early November this year and the inauguration of the new President is scheduled to take place on 20 January, almost a week after the investors’ summit.

While stating that the timing of the event was challenging, he said that the Gujarat chief minister has extended the invitation to US to be partner country and that they would give a serious consideration to it.

It may be noted that US secretary of State John Kerry had visited VGGIS in 2015.

So far countries including Canada, UK and Poland have confirmed their participation for the summit this year as partner countries.

The biennial aimed to draw investments and create a business friendly environment in the state is a brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the chief minister of the state. Modi has so far attended all the editions of the summit and he is expected to attend the next edition too.
