New Delhi: The 17-month-long wait ended on Wednesday when a ram leela was performed in Ayodhya for the first time since November 2015. Soon after taking charge as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath decided to restart ram leela performances in the temple town.

The Uttar Pradesh government on 26 April decided to resume ram leela performances in Ayodhya, raslila in Mathura and bhajan sandhya in Chitrakoot.

“We started the first show of ram leela, and now we hope that the shows will run continuously without any hurdles. We have received all official orders from the culture department," Ram Teerath, assistant manager of the Ayodhya Research Centre, told PTI on Wednesday.

The statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government said that ram leela would be staged by Avadh Aadarsh Ram Leela Mandal of Mahant Jayram Das from 3 May to 17 May, while Balaji Ram Leela Mandli of Harihar will perform it from 18 May to 1 June.

The daily performances of ram leela in Ayodhya started during the tenure of former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on 20 May 2004. However, these performances were stopped on 24 November 2015, when Akhilesh Yadav was the chief minister.

The previous Samajwadi Party (SP) government in Uttar Pradesh had announced an international Ramleela theme park to be constructed on the banks of Sarayu river in Ayodhya. The announcement was made by the Akhilesh Yadav government in October last year.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has also announced that a Ramayan Museum will be constructed in the temple town.
