Mumbai: Shares of insurance companies jumped after finance minister Arun Jaitley announced a health protection scheme for 100 million poor families in his budget for the next fiscal year.

Insurance cover of up to Rs5 lakh will be provided to each family under the scheme, Jaitley said.

At noon, shares of SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd, New India Assurance Co Ltd, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd, HDFC Standard Life Insurance Co. Ltd, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd, General Insurance Corp. of India were up 5.9%, 5%, 3.37%, 2 .46% 1.03% and 0.94%, respectively, on the BSE.
