New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday extended Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal’s interim bail till 1 July when the regular bail hearing is scheduled.

A bench of justices Vikramajit Sen and Shiva Kirti Singh directed for continuation of the existing bail arrangement till Tuesday. The apex court resumes its regular hearings from 30 June. A regular bench will now hear Tejpal’s bail plea.

At the hearing, additional solicitor general Neeraj Kishen Kaul appearing for Goa brought to the notice of the court that fresh first information report (FIR) had been filed against Tejpal around intimidation of the victim, which would go against grant of his bail. Allegations that phishing emails were sent to the victim’s partner was also raised.

Phishing is an attempt to secure sensitive information through emails and similar electronic communication by appearing to be a trusted source.

Tejpal, who founded Tehelka magazine, was in custody in a Goa jail on allegations of sexual harassment and rape since 30 November. By way of two applications on grounds of performing rites after his mother’s demise, Tejpal has been out on interim bail. His bail was due to end on Friday.

Tejpal, 50, stepped down from the position of editor of Tehelka after the sexual assault allegations against him came to light.
