Thousands visit Bangalore’s biggest public library everyday. Some thumb through newspapers, others do research. But only a few hundred actually check out books- the result of a membership rule stipulating proof of address in the form of official government ID.
The unique identity programme, Aadhaar, could soon help city’s libraries turn a page.
There are currently about 150,000 library members in Bangalore.
Deputy director of the State Central Library, N.F. Nagesh says UIDs could increase its membership numbers.
One group the cards won’t help though, is students. With university cards at hand, they’re good to go.
