Rural development ministry aims to complete socio-economic caste census by 15 August
Census to help government rank households based on income and target the delivery of subsidies and government aid to the needy
New Delhi: Rural development minister Choudhary Birender Singh has asked his ministry officials to complete data collection for the socio-economic caste census (SECC) by 15 August, a ministry statement said.
The census will help government rank households based on income and target the delivery of subsidies and government aid to the needy. So far of the 640 districts in the country, the survey of 617 districts have been completed, the statement said.
“A development plan at gram panchayat (village council) level based on SECC would enable convergence of resources, funds and government’s intervention for preparing and implementing gram panchayat plan for speedy and targeted poverty reduction. The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) will use the SECC data to plan for poverty free panchayats involving PRIs (panchayti raj institutions) and self-help groups from poor households," it said.
