Order on Vijay Mallya’s payout case today

The Bengaluru Bench of the Debt Recovery Tribunal on 5 March reserved its order till 7 March on an application by the State Bank of India-led consortium of banks seeking a garnishee order against the UK-based Diageo Plc. to restrain it from paying a $75 million severance package to industrialist Vijay Mallya and deposit the sum with the tribunal. The Bench said it would take up the hearing of the consortium’s three other applications—for the arrest of Mr. Mallya, seizure of his passport and for getting full disclosure of his assets in the country and abroad—after ruling on the application for a garnishee order against Diageo Plc.

World Twenty20 starts 8 March

As India lifted the Asia Cup trophy without losing a single match in the tournament, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said they were well on track for the World Twenty20, beginning 8 March. The match timings and warm-up schedule of ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 was announced in February.

Sebi meetings

Merchant bankers will request capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) at a 9 March meeting to remove the requirement that shares of companies listed on the small and medium enterprises (SME) platforms of stock exchanges be bought and sold only in lots of 1 lakh, Mint reported.

Sebi will also consider a proposal to allow an individual foreign investor to hold as much as 15% in a local stock exchange in its 12 March board meeting. The meeting will also discuss reforms suggested for the alternative investment funds industry and ways to strengthen rules governing the commodity markets.

Jewellers strike to continue today

Jewellers will go on with their strike till 7 March against the budgetary proposal to re-impose 1% excise duty on jewellery despite the government’s assurance that it will look into the issue. Jewellers have been on a strike since 2 March protesting against the proposed excise duty imposition on non-silver jewellery items made in the Budget 2016-17 as well as a mandatory quoting of permanent account number by customers for transaction of 2 lakh and above.

Delhi court reserves order for 9 March on Jaitley’s defamation plea

A Delhi court has reserved its order for 9 March on a criminal complaint filed by finance minister Arun Jaitley against chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and five other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for allegedly defaming him in the DDCA controversy. Jaitley has alleged that Kejriwal and other AAP leaders had made defamatory statements that he and his family had made pecuniary gains by associating with a sports management firm.

Hyderabad HC to hear PIL on Sukma encounter deaths

The Hyderabad high court has directed Khammam police in Telangana to preserve the bodies of the eight Maoists who were killed in an allegedly fake encounter in Sukma district of neighbouring Chhattisgarh on 1 March. The elite anti-Naxal force of Telangana police, Greyhounds, was involved in the encounter, reported India Today . The unclaimed bodies will be preserved till 9 March when the court will hear the PIL.

Rahul Gandhi to visit Punjab on 12 March

After Uttar Pradesh, Congress leaders will brainstorm over their game plan for the Punjab polls in the presence of political strategist Prashant Kishor at a meeting called on 12 March by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi. Congress has been out of power in Punjab for the past decade. Apart from the ruling SAD-BJP combine, the party is set to face a spirited challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

International Women’s Day celebrations

Air India will celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March by flying 20 all-women domestic flights. “Air India will be flying 20 all women domestic flights on March 8 to commemorate International Women’s Day. The details regarding their routes and timings are expected to be disclosed by Monday evening," said Saurabh Gupta, the airline’s public relations officer. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed that only women parliamentarians should speak in Parliament on 8 March to mark the International Women’s Day.

Solar eclipse on 9 March

A total solar eclipse will occur on 9 March and it will be seen as partial solar eclipse at sunrise from most places in India except from north-west and western parts of the country. The total eclipse phase will begin at 5.47am (IST) and it will last till 9.08am. The partial phase will, however, end at 10.05am (IST). In most places of India, the partial phase of the eclipse will begin before sunrise, which means a partially eclipsed sunrise will take place.

Maruti’s Vitara Brezza to be launched on 8 March

Unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo last month, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the first compact SUV offering from India’s largest car manufacturer, is being launched on 8 March. There has been a lot of confusion over the launch date, which earlier was said to be 21 March. To begin with, Maruti Suzuki will be launching the Vitara Brezza only with a diesel engine: a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder DDiS 200 affair that makes 90PS of power and 200Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, Volvo S60 Cross Country will be officially introduced in India on 11 March, at a Mumbai hotel.
