Home / Industry / Comedy and torrent sites come under porn ban

The department of telecommunications has banned 857 porn websites, including popular adult websites such as redtube.com, xvideos.com, pornhub.com and youporn.com. A closer look at the list of banned sites, however, reveals that the government has also banned torrent sites, video sharing sites and comedy sites.

Torrent websites are used to download albums, audios, computer programs, music, videos, movies, mp3 torrent files, TV programs, images and games.

Here is a list of 10 sites that are not pornographic in nature but have come under the clampdown.

1. CollegeHumor.com: One of the most popular comedy sites on the web, it is intended for college students. This is a site related to humour and features original and funny videos and articles created by its in-house writing and production team, in addition to videos, pictures, articles and links submitted by users.

2. Kickass.to and H33t.to: The list includes two of the biggest Torrent sites that have been blocked. Ban on torrent sites has elicited huge criticism on social media channels. However, kickass. to is now operating under the new Kat.cr domain name so the effects of the blockade are minimal. Legally India reports that kickass.com and kickass.to, sites hosting torrent files that allow users to download mostly copyrighted content from other users, have also been blocked.

3. VidBull, VodLocker, PutLocker: These video streaming sites became inaccessible after the ban and users took to platforms like Reddit cursing the government’s move to ban these sites.

4. Le Dauphine: The DoT’s notification also included Le Dauphiné Libéré, a local French daily, which is published out of Grenoble. The newspaper is highly regarded for its coverage of local and provincial news.

5. Barstool Sports: This is a satirical blog on sports and lifestyle, but has been banned.

6. ShitBrix.com: The website reportedly collects Internet memes and factoids.

7. PopUrls: Even social media content aggregator PopURLs has been blocked as per the order. PopUrls claims to be the mother of news aggregators, a single page that encapsulates up-to-the-minute headlines from most popular sites on the Internet.

8. Liveleak.com: A website that collects leaked videos, but isn’t really known for porn stuff.

9. Nonvegjokes.com: As the name suggests, this site specializes in dirty jokes.

10. 9gag.tv: This is another humour website that hosts viral videos, according to Legally India.

The story has been modified to remove names of websites that had already been banned earlier this year.
