Mumbai: The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), a lobby group for transporters, on Wednesday said it would organise a nationwide strike if the government failed to resolve issues facing the sector by 30 March.

Essential items, like fruits, vegetables and medicines are being kept out of the indefinite strike proposed to start on 1 April, the lobby group said in a statement.

AIMTC represents approximately 75 lakh truckers and transporters and approximately 40 lakh bus and tourist operators.

The demands of AIMTC include industry status for the road transport sector, immediate withdrawal of a hike proposed on third party insurance premium for goods vehicles, fixing of minimum freight rates for the road transport sector and the removal of monthly increases of diesel prices.
