1996: The Samata Party offers support to the 13-day Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

February 2005: Assembly elections in Bihar produce a fractured mandate.
October 2005: The alliance comes back to power in Bihar, with Kumar as chief minister again.
2009: The alliance fights the general election together.

13 June 2013: Kumar says he is in touch with the chief ministers of West Bengal and Orissa, indicating this to be an “initial stage” in the formation of a new political front.
