Delhi HC issues show-cause notice to ACB chief
High court asks M.K. Meena why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for removing an officer of ACB
New Delhi: Delhi high court on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to M.K. Meena, chief of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), asking him why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for removing an officer of the anti-graft body.
The notice was in response to a complaint by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government, which also sought contempt proceedings against Brij Mohan, who was recently appointed by Meena as station house officer (SHO) of ACB.
The Delhi government, in its contempt plea, said it was constrained to file the contempt petition as Meena had “willfully violated" the court’s 29 June order, which had asked Lt governor-appointee to act in “accordance with the law".
Meena created a stir by hunting out inspector Vinay Malik as SHO of ACB, appointed by the city government, and appointing inspector Brij Mohan in his place.
“He does not have the authority to appoint and post people on his own. He has appropriated power beyond what is assigned to him," said Dayan Krishnan, counsel for the Delhi government.
The Delhi government also claimed that Meena refused to register an FIR against employees of the Delhi Development Authority, against whom a sub-divisional magistrate had filed a complaint of corruption.
The court sought a response from Meena and Brij Mohan on the next date of hearing—25 August.
