As many as nine protesters from the PMANE (People’s movement against nuclear energy), which has been at the helm of the protests, have been arrested and additional police forces have been deployed in the southern village to control the agitation.
“The struggle has always taken a non-violent direction, but the government is trying to crush this with the police force," said Gnani Sankaran, senior journalist and political commentor, who is part of the Chennai Solidarity group for the Koodankulam struggle.

Activists point out that emergency drills have not been conducted and that the expert committee from the central and state government did not reach out to the community in the area, thereby failing their mandate to allay the fears of the local people.
