Wheat stocks adequate, no rush for imports

New Delhi, 19 September India hopes to have 5.3 million tonnes of wheat stocks on April 1, ahead of the new crop arriving in markets, Food Corp of India Chairman Alok Sinha said today, reducing the pressure for immediate imports.

Sinha, head of the country’s largest grain procurement agency, told Reuters in an interview that compared with the targetted buffer of 4 million tonnes.

“The stock position is pretty good," Sinha said. “As of date we have 10.5 million tonnes of wheat stocks, enough to meet demand for 11 months at the present rate of off-take." REUTERS
