New Delhi: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala led by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan came to power with a decisive win of 91 seats in the 140-member assembly. In an interview, Vijayan laid out the broad development for the state, adding that the centre-state relationship has begun. The key takeaways from the interview:

On centre-state relationship

Pinarayi said the state government approached the central government to seek support in addressing some of the issues confronting the state’s development and human resources. So far it has received positive response from the central government on issues.

On GST

He says that while the Left parties’ view that states which stand to lose revenue should be compensated has not been dropped, for Kerala, he sees GST to be beneficial.

On prohibition

He says the Kerala government is in favour of abstinence, not prohibition. He said that prohibition leads to many socio-legal problems.

On Kerala’s economy

Admitting that Kerala is financially weak, the chief minister said that to get a clear picture the government is working on a white paper on the state’s financial position.

On new initiatives

The Kerala government has put in place a code of conduct for ministers and bureaucrats to ensure better governance. He said full development of the tourism sector along with developing the information technology sector can help meet the target of creating 25 lakh jobs in five years.

On new phase in industry-labour relations

For far too long, businesses have frowned upon Kerala for its militant trade unionism. Vijayan acknowledges that there is a misplaced perception among businesses about the state’s workforce, but said he is determined to change that.
