New Delhi/Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday said that it had arrested former West Bengal police chief Rajat Majumdar as part of its probe into the Rs2,000 crore deposit-taking scam involving the Kolkata-based Saradha Group, which ran aground more than a year ago.
Majumdar, who was earlier questioned by the agency, was arrested in in Kolkata “on grounds of conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation of funds,” a CBI official said.
Majumder, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who retired as director general of police in West Bengal, was variously described as vice-president and consultant to the Saradha Group.
He advised the Saradha Group on policy matters and lobbied for it with the state government and political leaders, according to former Saradha Group employees, who did not wish to be named.
Majumder is also a key Trinamool Congress functionary who served as the party’s observer for the Birbhum district during the recent village council elections in the state. Currently, he is a director of West Bengal Power Development Corp. Ltd; he joined its board in March last year, weeks before the Saradha Group collapsed.
Majumder took ill after he was arrested on Monday and was taken to a state-run hospital for treatment.
